Authorities from Mexico City and the State of Mexico have activated the environmental contingency, which involves implementing measures to reduce air pollution. Among the actions taken is the restriction of vehicle circulation, particularly official vehicles, except for hybrid or electric vehicles, emergency vehicles, surveillance, and urban services.
During an environmental contingency, activities such as burning materials and waste are prohibited, forest fire surveillance is increased, maintenance work on urban infrastructure that generates emissions is suspended, and roadworks that affect traffic are halted. Additionally, the public is required to disclose protection recommendations due to poor air quality.
To combat pollution, measures are imposed on various sectors. For example, gas stations without vapor recovery systems must reduce their operations. The manufacturing industry must decrease its emissions and suspend pollution-generating activities. Refineries and thermoelectric plants have restrictions on their operational capacity, and activities in kilns are suspended.
In the commercial and service sectors, the use of products that pollute the air, such as solvents and paints, is prohibited. Fuel stations must reduce their activities, and those using firewood or coal without adequate emission control are suspended. In general, the population is urged to reduce fuel consumption and take measures to improve air quality.
During an environmental contingency, it is advised to avoid outdoor activities, specifically between 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM, periods when pollutants are most concentrated. It is suggested to shop online, reduce the use of solvent-containing products, and adjust daily habits, such as showers and cooking, to reduce pollutant emissions.
